Several major platforms advertise a price match or "best price guarantee," promising to match or beat a lower price found elsewhere for the same room. It's a genuinely useful feature when it applies — but the eligibility rules are narrower than the marketing headline suggests, and most claims get rejected on a technicality.
The most common disqualifier is that the comparison rate has to be for an identical rate plan — same cancellation terms, same meal inclusion, same room category — not just the same hotel and dates. A lower price with a stricter cancellation policy usually doesn't qualify, even if it's genuinely the better deal for a traveler who doesn't need flexibility.
Timing rules trip people up too. Some guarantees only apply before booking, meaning you have to find the lower price and submit a claim before you complete your reservation, not after. Others require the comparison price to be currently bookable at the moment of the claim, which rules out a price that was live an hour ago but has since sold out or changed.
None of this makes the guarantees worthless — they can genuinely save money when the comparison is truly apples-to-apples and submitted in time. It just means treating the guarantee as a backstop worth checking, not a substitute for comparing platforms yourself before you book in the first place.
