Free cancellation is one of the most common rate features on any booking platform, and it's also one of the most underused. Travelers pay a small premium over the non-refundable rate for the flexibility, then never revisit the booking again unless their plans actually change.
That's a missed opportunity, because free cancellation isn't just insurance against your trip falling through — it's a built-in mechanism for capturing a price drop. If the same room gets cheaper after you've booked, a free-cancellation rate lets you cancel the original reservation and rebook at the new, lower price with no penalty, keeping the difference.
This only works within the cancellation window, which varies by rate and property — sometimes 24 hours before check-in, sometimes as much as a week. Once that window closes, the flexibility disappears even if the booking still shows as "free cancellation" in your confirmation email, so it's worth knowing the actual deadline, not just the label.
The rate premium for free cancellation is usually modest — often a few percent over the locked-in price. If there's any realistic chance the price could move in your favor before the deadline, that premium is frequently smaller than the potential savings from catching even one price drop.
